Tomorrow sees a double header at Compton Park as we meet M.K Irish at both Reserve and First team level. It will be the first run out for Kevin Squirrell’s team, ironically against the same team we faced in a league game, albeit many months ago. That was the first meeting between our sides here and it was a comfortable game for the Cooks, running out 4-0 winners. Imad Abassi came off the bench to score a hat-trick, with young Elijah Noel our other scorer that night.
The first team have yet to meet this new club who only formed in the summer of 2020, when Buckingham Town and MK Unite merged, taking their new name from the Irish Centre where both clubs had groundshared in recent years. Buckingham Town are of course a very familiar name in the UCL and were not too long ago one of the leading lights in the Premier Division, but they had fallen on hard times, made worse by being thrown off their own ground, the once impressive Ford Meadow in the town. They had recently swapped to the Spartan South Midlands League Division One and that is where the new club found themselves and manager Terry Shrieves soon built up a strong squad and was rewarded by promotion to step five at the end of their first (albeit rather short season) so a new challenge awaits the boys from Manor Fields.
They also enjoyed a good run in the F.A Vase making it through to the third round proper before losing out on penalties away to Fakenham Town. Last season’s marksman for the Irish was Mason Spence who banged in 17 goals in just 14 appearances, a pretty good return at that level of football.
Our visitors started their pre-season campaign last Saturday against fellow Milton Keynes side Old Bradwell United and despite a Dom Lawless goal, they were beaten by the step seven team 2-1 at Manor Fields. We played our first game on Monday night and were held 1-1 by a useful looking Bedford FC side, with Josh Adams scoring our equaliser with an excellent finish early in the second half. We got our first glimpse of all the new signings as Craig Adams opted to get 45 minutes into everyone’s legs, whilst Will Bates, Paddy Cichosz, Troy Johnson and Jack Riley all featured from last season’s squad. There were also returns to the blue kit for former Cooks players Harry Arundel, Sam Liddington, Dan Mortimer and Anton Urso. Michael Cirelli and the injured Will Russell were the only absentees.
