The under 18’s travelled to Bedfordshire on Wednesday night to play their first competitive game of the season against Barton Rovers, in the preliminary round of F.A Youth Cup.
With a couple of lads unavailable, we still managed to put out a strong side. The Cooks didn’t have the best of starts, within the first 10 they were getting caught in possession and giving needless balls away. However it wasn’t long before they got a grip of the game and started to dominant and producing some very good football. Andis scored our first goal on 27 minutes, Caleb put a decent ball in from the left, the Barton defender got a foot to the ball, but it fell to Andis just inside the 18 yard box, he stuck it first time and fired it into the corner the net. 1-0 Cogenhoe. With the Cooks now looking in total control, Barton Rovers were awarded a free kick just inside our half, a great delivery in with one of the Barton players losing his man and he came round the back before finishing well to make it 1-1 just before half time.
This was a wake-up call for the Cooks, from looking like there was only going to be one winner, we gave them a lifeline and let them back in it. No changes at half time, the second half the Cooks really stepped it up a gear and played at a much higher tempo, within 6 minutes we were back in front, a well worked free kick with Ben playing it down the left wing to Caleb, he hit a fantastic ball in for Teddy to head home. 2-1 to Cogenhoe.
61 minutes in and we made our first change with Charlie replacing Andis. Charlie made an instant impact, winning a header and then picking up the second ball he found Manny in space who whipped in a great ball in to the six yard box with Matty poking home to make it 3-1. 63 minutes gone.
Second change for the Cooks on 68 minutes with Elijah replacing Caleb. Soon the ball was in the back of the Barton net again, but for some reason the ref disallowed it, Ben then hit a great strike from the edge of the box but was denied by the post. With the last kick of the game Matty picks up a loose ball out from the keeper and calmly slots home and the then the ref blew his whistle with the Cooks winning 4-1. All credit to the Barton lads, a very young team and kept working hard right throughout the game. Credit to Nat Allam who was playing his first game for the U18s, whilst man-of-the-match goes to Manny Asante who pips two-goal Matty Fletcher to the accolade.
The Cooks now look forward to a home game on September 16th against the winner of Hitchin Town or Bugbrooke St Michaels who play on Thursday night.
Thanks to U18s gaffer for the report. Not easy to do while managing the side from the dug-out I can assure you.
