Sorry,

No full report or photos today as my car is in the garage and I couldn’t make the game. Thanks mainly go to the Newport Pagnell Town Twitter feed team for the action details below.

Darren Long was able to welcome back skipper Rico Alexander and Alex Vaughan from Covid with the latter amongst the substitutes, whilst Josh Adams reclaimed the number three shirt after sickness ruled him out of the Chenecks game. We were missing Paddy Cichosz and Dylan Wilson for reasons unknown to me, whilst Chief Boateng dropped to the bench with Jack Norman being handed his first start for some time in the number ten role. For the first time this season we also named a goalkeeper amongst the subs as Ben Westwood was called up from the reserves as back-up.

An early chance fell to The Swans, but Danny Webb couldn’t get his header on target from Kieran Barnes’ cross, but Webb soon had his name on the scoresheet after collecting a decent pass through the centre from Mo Ahmed and despite seeing his first effort blocked, he seized on the rebound before rounding Craig Foxall and slotting home. Webb was looking to be a real danger right from the start and only a good tackle stopped him getting clear through on goal for the in-form visitors. Cogenhoe went close with a header that looped over Martin Conway’s bar, then Jake Watkinson forced a good save out of Foxall before the Cooks keeper had to get down low to save a Webb header.

The Swans were shouting for a penalty when Kieran Barnes was bundled over, but Paul McVey deemed the foul to have been committed just outside the box and the free-kick was struck against the wall, whilst Webb had another go at goal from the edge of the box but it was much too high to trouble Foxall. Watkinson saw a shot deflected wide and Alfie Powell met the ensuing corner but couldn’t get his shot on target as Newport looked for their second goal of the game, but the Cooks were level through Tom Wakley when he headed home at the near post from Josh Adams’ corner just after the half-hour mark. The game was quickly turned on its head when Cogenhoe scored a second goal to take the lead as Wakley completed a quickfire double on 36 minutes.

Webb tried to lob Foxall but it dropped too late then Barnes went close to levelling things up early in the second half, but his effort was cleared off the line by a Cooks defender, before another goal-line clearance denied Watkinson as the third placed club continued to trail mid-table Cogenhoe. They had keeper Conway to thank for a fine save to deny the home side a third goal of the afternoon before the Cooks defence dealt with a couple of dangerous Ahmad corners, then Foxall denied Webb again after he had broken through on goal.

Adam Pryke headed wide and then Webb hit the post with a cross, but it was the Cooks who were celebrating again on 82 minutes when Ryan Archer fired home his second goal for the club. Swan’s sub Ben Shepherd hit the post with his free-kick late on but it was the Cooks who completed an excellent 3-1 double over the Swans who are likely to be glad to have seen the back of us for this season.
